Apple halts AR glasses project – but continues to invest in the field

In recent weeks, new industry reports have suggested that Apple has decided to discontinue development of its N107 augmented reality glasses, which were designed to be smart glasses that would connect to Mac computers. According to sources, the project was shelved due to technological complexities and high production costs, which made the product less commercially viable.

Does this mean Apple is giving up on augmented reality? Not exactly.

Apple still sees AR and VR as part of its future vision. In fact, the company is actively working on a reduced-cost version of the Apple Vision Pro , which is expected to be available in late 2025. This model, dubbed Vision Pro Lite (or Vision Standard), is expected to offer an advanced AR experience at a more affordable price, to compete directly with the Meta Quest glasses.

Investing in VisionOS and smart AR glasses

Alongside the development of the new Vision Pro model, Apple is also developing a customized version of its visionOS operating system for AR smart glasses. Its goal is to introduce the technology to the wider consumer market and create a platform that can compete with future AR glasses from Google and Samsung.

What's next?

Despite the cancellation of the N107 project, Apple is not giving up on augmented reality. The company plans to improve performance, reduce costs, and continue developing new products, with the launch of a cheaper version of the Vision Pro in 2025 likely being its next big move in the field.
