You always wanted to send your Facebook friends a message, but in VR? Nor have we, but as the v25 software update brings Facebook Messenger to Oculus Quest and Oculus Quest 2, you'll be able to try it, anyway.

The update will allow users who are logged into their Oculus device Facebook accounts (which is most people, we'll bet) to chat with Facebook friends who own any Messenger device.

That means between sessions of Beat Saber or Racket Fury, you'll be able to post your friends' Messenger mobile apps. Beautifully neat.

The company says in a blog post that without taking off the Oculus headset, you will write messages by either typing with a virtual keyboard, selecting from pre-written texts, or using the voice-to-text function of Quest.

Time of the Party
Users will also be able to send private Oculus Party invites to others using the VR headset through the messaging app, making it simpler to jump into multiplayer games with your friends.

Then, despite appearing to be a trivial addition, the Messenger update looks set to improve the ability of the Quest to interact with the outside world without having to leave VR.

While Oculus devices already have a messenger function in the Oculus Chats feature (used only for people on your Oculus friends list), Facebook Messenger now provides users who want to interact with others without a Quest headset with a cross-platform, system-wide option.

Facebook says that by using Messenger on the device, your existing Oculus privacy settings will not change and that we set the v25 update to roll out immediately, although some users can expect to wait a few weeks for it to arrive.
