In the past couple of years, virtual reality has gone from Sci-Fi technology to actually possible, and there has never been a better time to try it.

Video game consoles offer amazing graphics, especially new ones like the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, but they can not touch VR in terms of truly immersive gaming. You can actually become a part of the world you're playing in instead of seeing a flat image on a big screen. Virtual reality headsets have also become much more advanced, without getting larger or heavier, offering HD graphics and uncompromised fidelity.

If you want to get the best experience, virtual reality still requires a fair amount of space (about eight square feet), but that's the biggest barrier to VR gaming right now. This guide will explain everything you'll need to get started if you've been curious about this technology.

1. The Quest for Oculus 2
You will need a headset if you're just starting your VR journey. There are a lot of great choices out there, but Oculus Quest 2 is the best one for most individuals. Its greatest strength is that it's a standalone VR headset, meaning that all the technology built inside. You will not need a strong PC, cameras, or additional controllers; the box comes with everything you need to jump into VR gaming.

They designed the Quest 2 for comfort: it can accommodate most people with its adjustable head strap, and there is ample padding for long play sessions. I tried and found the Oculus Quest 2 comfortable to wear for myself, even though it still takes a little time to get used to wearing something strapped to your face.

For added comfort, the Quest 2 comes with a pair of wireless, motion-sensing controls that have an ergonomic, curved body. The headset guides you through how to use all of its features, including setting up your room to have a virtual play area, so you can avoid bumping into real-world objects.

The Oculus Quest 2 is the first VR headset that feels like it's intended for all, not just enthusiasts who want to be at the groundbreaking of technology.

2. Earbuds of High Quality
Typically, virtual reality headsets have speakers built into their headbands, but for a more immersive experience, you'll want to plug in a pair of earbuds. Because they are slim, have a "bass-driven" sound, and designed for high resolution (better-than-CD-quality) sound, we recommend 1More's triple-driver earbuds.

Eight pairs of ear tips come with the buds, so you can find the ones that fit your ears best. Their aluminum frame looks and feels premium, and there are volume controls for the microphone built into their cable, too. Upgrading to 1More's pair of earbuds will get you there if you want a fully immersive VR experience.

3. A Case for Carrying
The most convincing feature of the Oculus Quest 2 is its portability, and you'll want a case to keep your travel pristine. Oculus designed this one itself and can fit in a single, neat package with the Quest 2, its controllers, power adapter, and charging cable.

To fully secure the Quest 2, the hard-shell case zips up tightly and its custom inner molding will fit each accessory perfectly. The nicest touch is its hand strap, which makes carrying your headset around easier. If you plan on taking your Quest 2 out of the house, this is an essential accessory.

4. A Power Adapter Spare
Oculus bundles the Quest 2 with a power adapter, but just in case, it's important to have a spare. This one from AUKEY is small enough to fit in your pocket, but powerful enough to charge at full speed on most modern laptops.

There are two USB-C ports in AUKEY's adapter, so you could also use this accessory to charge both Quest 2 controllers at the same time. In this guide, this is one of the most versatile accessories, and can used with Quest 2 or any of your other gadgets.

5. A VR Stand Charging
A two-in-one accessory that can keep your device safe while adding flare to your gaming setup is Asterion's virtual reality headset stand.

The stand holds your headset at an angle that makes it easier to grab and raises it to prevent scratches from happening. It also features a USB-A port that can charge the headset.

There is a built-in LED light on this stand, which you can turn on by pressing a button on its base. You can switch between, or cycle between, red, gold, green, cyan, blue, lavender, and white colors. With any current-generation headset, you can use this stand.

Just make sure you get a charging cable too, as they do not include one in the box for Asterion.

6. An Adjustable Strap for the Head
The Oculus Quest 2 comes with an adjustable head strap, but we recommend this third-party solution if it doesn't fit you quite right.

It is available in two sizes: large and small, and can adjust by twisting the back of the strap with a small knob. This head strap has a "hat" shape that covers the back of your head, which when you move your head, can reduce the amount of jitters in the headset. This can keep the headset in focus, so to get a clear picture, you don't need to move it around.

For a VR headset that is already pleasant to wear, consider this head strap if you want a comfort upgrade.

7. A cable from a USB-C
You can charge any VR headset or wireless controller using Anker's USB-C cable, but it also unlocks the most impressive feature of Oculus Quest 2.

You will play VR games designed for high-end headsets by linking Quest 2 to your computer with this cable. Basically, it turns Oculus Quest 2 into a VR headset that is two-in-one.

For this use, Oculus has its own first-party cable, but Anker named this one as the best third-party choice. With Anker's charging accessories, we've had a lot of success in the past, which is why we recommend it here.
